In the NBA, the conference finals looked like they would be blowouts.
We seemed destined to return to the glory days of 80s basketball when
the Lakers and Celtics lit up on living rooms in the finals. The
Celtics pulled out one home win, and then gained a crucial game on the
road, pulling ahead in the series 2-1. But, Monday, the Pistons
evened the series 2-2. For the Celtics, the mantra of these playoffs
has been “Don’t worry, we’ll win at home”. This was true vs. Atlanta
(they won all 4 home games, and lost all their away games), and the
Cavs (same situation). However, the Pistons stole a game from the
Celtics in the Fleet Center (Boston’s home stadium), proving that the
C’s are not invincible in Boston. Thus, if it came down to a game 7,
there is no guarantee that Boston will prevail.
In
concordance, the Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Spurs, even
annihilating them in Game 2, 101-71. But on Sunday, the series went
back to San Antonio and the Spurs made the Lakers look like a little
league team, clobbering them 103-84. So what looked like two blowout
series, now appear as heated contests — with no clear winner in sight.
In more sports news, the NBA Draft lottery took place earlier
last week, with the Chicago Bulls nabbing the first pick in this year’s
draft. They will have a tough choice between a proven point guard,
Derrick Rose of Memphis, and a could-be mega superstar or might-be
average player, Michael Beasley of Kansas State. The Miami Heat, the
No. 2 pick, is hoping the Bulls take Beasley, because they desperately
want Derrick Rose — which would give them an elite back court of Rose
and Dwayne Wade. However, they have rumored that if the Bulls take
Rose, they will most likely trade the No. 2 pick. Either way, the NBA
draft is anything but predictable, and we will have to (eagerly) wait
until June 26th to find out how everything falls.
