NBA Playoffs

Boston Celtics (3) vs. Detroit Pistons (2)

In the NBA, the conference finals looked like they would be
blowouts. We seemed destined to return to the glory days of 80s
basketball when the Lakers and Celtics lit up on living rooms in the
finals. The Celtics pulled out one home win, and then gained a crucial
game on the road, pulling ahead in the series 2-1. But, the Pistons
evened the series 2-2. For the Celtics, the mantra of these playoffs
has been “Don’t worry, we’ll win at home”. This was true vs. Atlanta
(they won all 4 home games, and lost all their away games), and the
Cavs (same situation). However, the Pistons stole a game from the
Celtics in the Fleet Center (Boston’s home stadium), proving that the
C’s are not invincible in Boston. But, With the Celtics 106-102 Game 5
victory over Detroit, Boston seems destined for the Finals. Going out
on a limb? Not really, the Celtics are 29-0 when leading 3-2. Celtics play the Pistons in Game 6 Friday night.

San Antonio Spurs (1) vs. Los Angeles Lakers (3)

In concordance, the Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Spurs,
even annihilating them in Game 2, 101-71. But on Sunday, the series
went back to San Antonio and the Spurs made the Lakers look like a
little league team, clobbering them 103-84. But, the Lakers came back
with a vengeance and in Game 4, the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant helped
them hold on for a 93-91 victory over the Spurs. It was the Spurs’
first home loss in the postseason. The Spurs could be eliminated
tonight….stay tuned!

Big NBA News

The League office confirmed that San Antonio’s Derek Fisher should
have been called for foul at the end of Game 4 in the Celtics/Pistons
playoff. This foul could have changed the game

Watercooler Chat: Should there be instant replay in the NBA?

In more sports news, the NBA Draft lottery took place earlier
last week, with the Chicago Bulls nabbing the first pick in this year’s
draft. They will have a tough choice between a proven point guard,
Derrick Rose of Memphis, and a could-be mega superstar or might-be
average player, Michael Beasley of Kansas State. The Miami Heat, the
No. 2 pick, is hoping the Bulls take Beasley, because they desperately
want Derrick Rose — which would give them an elite back court of wRose
and Dwayne Wade. However, they have rumored that if the Bulls take
Rose, they will most likely trade the No. 2 pick. Either way, the NBA
draft is anything but predictable, and we will have to (eagerly) wait
until June 26th to find out how everything falls.

there is no guarantee that Boston will prevail.

NBA Playoff Update:

The Los Angeles Lakers now lead the San Antonio Spurs 2-1 in the series after losing 103-84 against the Spurs in Game 3 of
the Western Conference finals. The Spurs Manu Ginobili was the star of
game 3 with 30 points while playing with a sore ankle and ripped
fingernail (doesn’t sound like much, but if you’ve ever had one…
ouch!!!). Game 4 is Tuesday in San Antonio.

Indianapolis 500

After 13 years, the Indy 500 is now a unified race. What does this
mean? There was a spat that lead to two different open-wheel racing
teams: the Champ Car series and the Indy Racing League. The spat is now
over and it’s one big happy family again…and, thank goodness because
Sunday’s Indy 500 was truly a spectacle.

New Zealand’s Scott Dixon won this historic event amidst plenty of crashes (thankfully no one hurt) and lots of drama.

All eyes, of course, were on Danica Patrick who
was racing in the top 10 until she was hit on pit road. Patrick is no
shrinking flower. She got out of her car and headed straight toward the
driver who hit her, Ryan Briscoe. She was clearly looking for a fight,
but was stopped by security. This is one tough gal!

NBA Playoffs finally set: After a seven game series, Tony Parker (yes, the one married to Eva Longoria) of the San

Antonio Spurs did what everyone was expecting much earlier in the series…get to the finals. With a
91-82 win in Game 7 over the New Orleans Hornets, the Spurs will now
face the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western finals. Here’s the Final
ups! These are all best of seven.

  • Boston Celtics vs. Detroit Pistons
  • LA Lakers vs. San Antonio Spurs

Feel Good Moment: Boston
Red Sox’s John Lester pitched a no-hitter Monday night against the
Kansas City Royals in Fenway Park, the 18th no-hitter in Red Sox
history. You might remember that Lester battled back from cancer and
pitched an unbelievable game to help beat Colorado in a memorable Game
4 in the 2007 World Series.

Quite a weekend in sports.  A few series came to an end, and a new streak began.

Kobe
Bryant
and the Lakers finally finished off the pesky Utah Jazz in 6
games.  Now — they await the winner of the New Orleans/San Antonio
series, which concludes tonight in what will surely be an historic game
7.

Another great series came to a close on Sunday, as the
Boston Celtics took care of LeBron and the Cavs in Game 7, 97-92.  And
it was one of the best one-on-one shoot outs of all time, with the
Celtics Paul Pierce putting up 41 points and LeBron going crazy with
45.  Plus, PJ Brown hit a clutch 3-pointer with 1:21 remaining the in
the game to give the Celtics a 91-88 lead.  A lead they would hold
until the end.  They now advance to the Eastern Conference Finals
against the always tough Detroit Pistons.

And there’s more:
This one… on the rink.  The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the
Philadelphia Flyers, and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.  They did
this behind their young all-star, Sidney Crosby, who many consider to
be the best player in the league.  More importantly, in the past few
seasons the Penguins had become an almost forgotten franchise.  Now,
they are headed to the Finals, and are just four games away from
completely reclaiming the sport.

Finally, a new streak began
this week as Big Brown, the
Kentucky Derby champion, won The Preakness
in Baltimore.   Now he has won two of the three triple-crown events,
and will go for the third and final leg at the Belmont Stakes in three
weeks.  While it may only seem like a race to some, winning all three
major events is LEGENDARY and the amount of money involved in
just a 2 minute race is simply astounding.  Winning the Belmont stakes
and completing the trifecta would launch Big Brown into the halls of
sporting masterpieces. The last horse to win the Famed Triple Crown was
Affirmed in 1978.  So, question is… can you wish a horse luck?
